A picture is worth a thousand words, but wedding photos are worth a million! They are the tokens of your special day, images reminding you of the covenant you entered into, the celebration of a new season, & small captures of an unforgettable experience. There are so many amazing wedding photographers to choose from, so how do you choose the best photographer for you?

Find Your Wedding Photography Style

Every wedding photographer has their own flare, it is what makes them unique to their trade. As you are looking to find the right wedding photographer, look at the styles of shooting. Choose the style you love most, the one that catches your eye and encapsulates your vision for the day!

If you’re lost in a sea of photographers, here are some questions to consider when trying to define for your preferred photography style:

  • Are you more drawn to light & airy OR dark & moody?
  • Do you want a portrait approach OR someone to capture the natural moments?
  • Would you prefer film shooting OR digital shooting?

Read Reviews & Ask Around

After you find your preferred style, look for wedding photographers in your area that reflect that style. Many wedding photographers these days will use hashtags upon hashtags to be found on social media. We recommend local hashtags such as #raleighweddingphotography or #ncweddings to find some amazing wedding photographers. Once you narrow your search down, research their work and read reviews.

Dark & Moody

Here at the Landmark in Garner NC, we cannot put enough emphasis on reviews! They are small tokens of guidance in choosing a wedding photographer. See what other couples have to say about working with them. Ask other vendors if they’ve ever worked with them at a wedding, how did they respond? There is no harm in asking around to get to know the experience and reputation your selected vendor has. This will save you time and energy when selecting your wedding photographer.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask the Hard Questions

After finalizing your search, reach out to the desired wedding photographer to have an interest meeting. Check out their social media accounts to see their latest posts. Look at this meeting as a “first date.” Ask all the questions you can. Get to know them personally and professionally.

“When looking for a photographer, choose one who you feel the most at ease around. They will be the person who is with you at every moment on your wedding day.”

If you don’t know what questions to ask, we’ve got 10 “get to know you” questions for your photographer below:

  1. How long have you been shooting weddings? How many weddings have you photographed?
  2. What is your availability? Is my date available?
  3. What are your prices and packages? Can you personalize your packages?
  4. (If traveling) What are your travel fees?
  5. How long will the editing process take? When will we receive our photos back?
  6. Do you have a second shooter?
  7. How will you and your assistants be dressed for the event?
  8. What is the backup plan if you are unable to attend my event for an unforeseen reason?
  9. Have you ever shot a wedding at our particular venue? If not, are you available to check the venue out prior to the wedding?
  10. Do you have liability insurance? If so, what does that cover?

When planning my wedding, the best advice I received was, “there are 3 things that will be with you forever after the wedding is over: the pictures, the dress, and your spouse. Choose wisely.” As I looked into my vendors, my venue, and all the tiny details of wedding planning, this rang true in my head. So, I want to offer the same piece of advice to you. Don’t be afraid to be picky! In the end, choose what best fits you and the vision for your day! This not only applies to your photographer but to all of the vendors you choose to work with.
